Sandwich terns (Sterna sandvicensis) and swift terns (Sterna bergii) taking off from a beach. Sandwich terns are seabirds that breed in dense colonies on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts of Europe, and spend the winter at sea to the west of Africa and Asia.
