Evicted sharecropper farmers. Tents and vehicles of sharecroppers that have been evicted from farms in Missouri, USA, in January 1939. The land is the New Madrid spillway by the Mississippi, New Madrid County. Sharecropping is where a farmer allows tenant farmers to take a share of the crops. Sharecropping increased during the Great Depression of the 1930s, but then ended with increasing mechanisation, leading to widespread evictions. Taken by US photographer Arthur Rothstein (1915-1985) for a US government photography project that documented everyday American life between 1935 and 1944.
