Philip Pullman examines ethnic artifacts and trepanned skull at the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, which inspired him in his books

In his trilogy ' The Dark Materials', the Alethiometer, is given by The Master to Lyra. It was developed from the Chinese compasses in the Pitt Rivers Museum, with which it shares similarities. The alethiometer points to the truth and has symbols round the rim. Many of the scenes in 'His Dark Materials' take place in the Pitt Rivers Museum
