Frederick Seitz (1911-2008), US physicist, who helped pioneer the new field of solid-state physics. Seitz (left) was president of the United States National Academy of Sciences from 1962 to 1969. He is photographed with Detlev Wulf Bronk (1897-1975) a US scientist working in the field of biophysics, and Paul Weiss, with Ava Pauling in the background.
