. A description and history of vegetable substances, used in the arts, and in domestic economy . it. The durion is a particular favourite witli thenatives of the Eastern archipelago; and there aremany varieties of it. They all, however, belongto three principal ones :—The Borneo durion isfound in the island after which it is named. Itgrows to so great a size, that one fruit is a load for aman. The Cassomba, which has a smoother rind, ismore orange in the colour, more elongated in theshape, and contains fewer seeds and more pulp. TheBabi is a small, but very delicious sort. The kernelsor seeds of the durion, when roasted, have nearly thesame taste as chesnuts. It has not been found in awild state; but in the countries where it will growand ripen at all, it is easily cultivated. So highly isit esteemed, that it is the most costly fruit in thearchipelago—a single durion being worth more than,a dozen of the choicest pine-apples. The Lanseh, and the Jamlee, fruits of Sumatra, 2 N 40& VEGETABLE SUBStANCES, are esteemed most highly by the natives—the formernext to the The Malay Apple—Eugenia malaccemis. This, though an inferior fruit to the durion, isattractive by its fragrance—its smell being that of arose. The Malay apple belongs to a numerous genusof plants, there being a great number of species verygenerally diffused over the tropical countries. Thefruit of all the species is a fleshy rind, inclosing oneor two large seeds. The Malay apple varies in sizefrom about an inch in diameter to the bigness of amans fist. The skin is yellowish, thin, and shining;the nut large, and without any hard shell; and thepulp very wholesome and agreeable. The tree thatproduces it has a brown stem, about twenty feet high, very full of branches at the top; the young leavesare bright purple, and the old ones green. THE 3KCK, 401
