The swollen glands may remainin this condition indefinitely for months or years; but eventually theybegin to enlarge rapidly, lose their separate identity, and coalesce intolarge masses. Other glands in remote parts, as the axilla and groin, retroperitoneum, and arm, are affected. They may be soft and fluctuat-ing, or very dense and hard, but heat, tenderness, suppuration, and otherevidences of inflammation are absent. The spleen becomes greatly enlarged, but rarely attains the dimensionscommon in leucocythaemia. Other adenoid tissue in the intestine, tonsil, and posterior nares, and even the thymus, may enlarge and give rise topressure symptoms. Fever is a very constant symptom, but the type is not constant. Itmay be intermittent, remittent, relapsing, or continuous. A curious form HODGKINS DISEASE. 845. is that known as Ebdeins disease, Ruckfall, or the relapsing type inHodgkins disease. The accompanying chart illustrates the course of thefever during one of the paroxysms. In the interval, which may last tendays or more, the temperature is normal. The paroxysms last from 846 DISEASES OF THE BLOOD AND OF THE DUCTLESS GLANDS. three to ten days. The onset of the disease may be marked by feverand constitutional symptoms, and the glandular enlargement appears the other hand, in 3 cases reported by J. Dreschfeld,1 all the patientsenjoyed good health and were able to continue their work until a fewweeks before death. In all, the symptoms appeared suddenly, and con-sisted of pain, weakness, pallor, loss of appetite, and pyrexia. Coincidentwith the rapid and extensive enlargement of the glands, anaemia mayarise accompanied by the usual symptoms. Cough is often associatedwith anaemic dyspnoea, and in women menst
