Towards the East Cliff, with coastguard station and radio mast, St Mary's Church and ruins of Whitby Abbey. The abbey was founded in 657 and was the home of St Hilda and Caedmon. The current ruins are of the 13th and 14th century Benedictine church, which was built on the site of the original abbey.
