Epidural anaesthetic. An anaesthetist inserts a cannula into a patient's back in order to give an epidural anaesthetic prior to oesophagogastrectomy surgery. An epidural anaesthetic is delivered to the epidural space (the space around the membranes that surround the spinal cord). Oesophagogastrectomy is an operation to remove the lower part of the oesophagus, and the upper part of the stomach. The remaining part of the oesophagus is then surgically joined to the remaining part of the stomach. The procedure is commonly carried out to remove cancerous tissue in the region.
