Smelter and refinery, historical artwork. Smelting is the process of removing pure metal from its ore by heating the oxidized ore in the presence of a reducing agent and a fluxing agent. This is the 'red mine of St Nicholas'. This mine was located near the French commune of Steinbach in the Alsace region. A waterwheel is at left. The labels (in French) are: the foundry (at left, label at upper left), the refinery (at right, label at upper right), carbon or coal (far right), and lead (centre). The coal is being used as a reducing agent. Artwork from the third edition of 'Les Entrailles de la Terre' (1902) by French author Eugene Caustier.
