Recovering coma patient. This patient has had a tracheostomy to insert a tube into his trachea (windpipe) to aid his breathing. A feeding tube has also been inserted into his stomach. This patient is being cared for at the Awakening Unit of the St John the Baptist Hospital, Rome, Italy. This unit, which opened in 1997, has advanced radiology and diagnostic equipment for assessing patients with head and brain injuries, and those in a coma. The medical staff specialise in rehabilitation, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, aimed at helping patients to recover from their injuries.
