Jonathan Swift


Jonathan Swift was born in 1667 in Dublin, Ireland and educated at Trinity College, Dublin and Hertford College, Oxford University. He came to England in 1688 because of the political troubles in Ireland and took a position as secretary to a diplomat, Sir William Temple. He was ordained as an Anglican priest and served as Vicar of a parish in Ireland and eventually as Dean of St Patrick’s in Dublin. He is remembered for his writings which place him foremost amongst English satirists. He also published a number of essays, poems and pamphlets on social and political subjects and was a prolific writer. Among his best known works are Gulliver’s Travels, A Tale of the Tub. A Modest Proposal and A Battle of Books. He died in 1745 and he is buried in St Patrick’s Cathedral
