The society re-mained a member of the association untilSept. 24, 1895, when it decided to with-draw and to publish its own journal, andthe first issue of the present Journal ofthe Western Society of Engineers appear-ed in January, 1896. The growth of the society in member-ship and financial strength cannot be givenhere in detail. Briefly, the growth in mem-bership has been about 8 per cent per yearfrom the beginning. The Western Society of En-gineers is 39 years old, having been or-ganized with twelve members on May 25,1869, but for the first twelve years of itslife it was known as the Civil EngineersClub of the Northwest. The change to thepresent name was made in June, its existence as a club the societyincreased to a membership of 130, and ithad had as presidents among others twoMayors of Chicago, Col. R. B. Mason andDeWitt C. Creiger, the noted railway en-gineer, Charles Paine, and the equally fam-ous hydraulic engineer, E. S. the organization has all through itslife been noteworthy for the names of themen who have occupied the presidentschair, such men as John F. Wallace, IshamRandolph, Octave Chanute, Bion J.
