The Yakutian or Yakut is a native horse breed from the Siberian Sakha Republic (or Yakutia) region of Russia. It is large compared to the otherwise similar Mongolian horse and Przewalski's horse. It is noted for its adaptation to the extreme cold climate of Yakutia, including the ability to locate and graze on vegetation that is under deep snow cover, and to survive without shelter in temperatures that reach −70 °C (−94 °F). The horses appear to have evolved from domesticated horses brought with the Yakuts when they migrated to the area beginning in the 13th century, and are not descended from wild horses known to inhabit the area in Neolithic times. Yakut horse is the most northern breed being developed all the year round in the open air under extreme northern conditions. Breeding of the Yakut species of horse, developed under severe conditions of the North by people's selection, is a traditional occupation of the rural inhabitants in Yakutia. Already in January-February, despite the fifty-degree frosts, the herders begin to collect horses in the taiga, clean them from snow, cull the sick or the weak animals and send them to special corrals for additional supplement feeding. The horse- breeding, basing on year-round pasturing, has become one of the main and profitable branches of stock-breeding, the base of the life style and economy of rural inhabitants. Horses are bred for meat and milk production, as well as for work. Horse for the Yakut people, first of all, is a means of transportation and pulling force. Besides that, Yakut horse is used in farm works, haymaking, hunting and fishing in the countryside, and tourism. in picture: a horse yard.
