Part of the vaulting arches arepointed, and part not, and there are other signs of anearlier vaulting than that of the fourteenth decoration, carvings, and mouldings belong toseveral epochs. In the south arcade sculpture and baseprofiles are Romanesque, in the west Romanesque mixedwith Gothic, in the north Gothic only, and in the eastCatalan-Gothic. ELNE. 38 298 ELNE The fourteenth-century doorway into the church hasalternate voussoirs of red and white marble, richlymoulded ; the jambs have engaged colonnettes answer-ing to the mouldings of the archivolt, with caps offoliage, human heads, and fantastic animals. Thedoor itself has four horizontal iron bands, with scrollsattached above and below, and ornamental band also surrounds each leaf, except at the bottom,and two hanging rings on a circular toothed ornamentserve as handles, though there is also an upright handleand a lock. The arrangement of the door is repre-sented on one of the early carvings of the piers, sug-gesting that it is earlier than the doorway in which itis set. On the north side is a two-light window, the groundfalling steeply here. Of the two other doors, one leadsinto the chapter-house, now used as sacristy, and theother to the
