The grave of the real-life Alice in Wonderland is being restored to mark the book's 150th anniversary The last resting place of Alice Hargreaves, born Alice Liddell, has become delapidated and in need of being restored, according to followers of author Lewis Carroll. Miss Liddell, as she was then was, was the inspriration for Carroll's world-famous adventures of the little girl who fell down a rabbit hole. Alice died in 1934 aged 82 and is buried in the churchyard at St Michael and All Angels Church, Lyndhurst, Hants. Her sons were christened in the same church. Her father, Henry Liddell was the dean of Church College, Oxford and the author, real name Charles Dodgson, befriended Alice there. A stone marks her grave inscribed: The grave of Mrs Reginald Hargreaves, The Alice in Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Now a fund is being started by parishoners and fans of Lewis Carroll to spruce-up the seven foot square grave. Lyndhurst Parish Council and church warden Ann Rogers is leading the restoration project. Mrs Rogers, 68, said:'' It looks a real mess but we are going to put some roses near it to make it look more loved. ''We wanted to do something and the stonemasons are coming next week to do some repairs. '' We are trying to repair the grave and put fresh flowers on it. '' It is a square of stone with a bed of roses in the middle but part of the stone is breaking away. The whole thing could do with a clean-up.'' ends Words and pictures, Mike Walker Pictures,2015
