The mission given in the parish of St. Gabriel bythe Redemptorist Fathers Wissel and Fetch, Avith theirassociates, in November, 1873, afforded great consolationto the reverend pastor. He has had the direction of the Sisters of Mercy ofthis city for many years, having been appointed to thatcharge by his Eminence Cardinal McCloskey. A morestriking proof of the confidence felt by his Eminence inthe sacredotal experience, judgment and prudence of thepastor of St. Gabriels is seen in the fact that he hasselected him as a member of the Council of the diocese,whose advice he takes on all important OHUKOH OF TlIK HOLY CROSS. WEST FORTY-SECOND STREET. CHURCH OF THE HOLY CROSS. AVEST FORTY-SECOND STREET. THIS churcli recalls the memory of the first Cath-olic priest who is known to have visited Man-hattan Island and exercised his sacerdotal functions among:civilized men upon it. Father Isaac Jogiies, avIio wasrescued by the Dutch from the liands of the Ijlood-tliirstyMohawks, descended the noble Hudson witli his deliver-ers, who, out of respect for one who had suffered somuch in his labors to extend the gospel, iiamed an islandin the river after the missionary. Father Jogues was a lover of the cross, and in one ofhis writings styles himself a Citizen of the Holy Cross,because the cathedial of his native citv, Orleans, wasdedicated to the Holy Cross. In
