HYNES, late Public Ad-ministrator, to which office he\vas elected for five successive terms,was born in Rutland, ^ermont, butin his early youth removed with his])arents to San Francisco. His edu-cation was obtained in the pul:)licand private schools of the city. Upon leaving high school, he en-gaged in the printers trade and be-came an expert compositor, also de-Noting himself to acquiring a thor-I »ugh knowledge of the pressmanswork. He developed an inclination,however, towards a commercial ca-reer, and entered the employ of theCity of Paris Drygoods Company,with which he continued without in-termission for twenty-nine years, ris-ing from a minor position imtil hebecame cashier of the company and one of the five directors. Mr. Hynes was first elected as Public Administrator in 1904 andwas regularly returned, receiving increasing majorities at each succeedingelection. Throughout his long occupancy
