Enlisted in Boston for three years ; mustered at Lowell, Mass.,Feb. 5, 1862, as private in Co. K, and accredited to the quotaof Hingham ; promoted corporal, and afterwards sergeant. Lieut. Dawes was with the Thirty-first at New Orleans, La.,when that city surrendered to the Union forces. He after-wards rendered efficient service upon garrison and outpost duty. Oct. 3, 1862, he was transferred to the Second Louisiana Vol-unteers, colored, and promoted second lieutenant; was presentat the battle of Port Hudson, &c. After serving under the lastpromotion about fifteen months, he resigned his position andcame home. Lieut. Dawes died in Hingham of consumption, Nov. 4, 1870,aged 38 years, 7 months, 21 days.
