From the Delphinion to the Seldjuk Baths and towards the Ionic Stoa, Ancient City of Miletos


The Delphiinion was the sacred area of Apollo under water for this photo taken in May 2008 (suspect most of the water will evaporate enabling closer view of the area). Apollo Delphinius, the dolphin god had the role of protecting sailors. The first temple was founded in the archaic period with finds dating back to the 5th century BC during the Hellenistic age the sacred area was extended on four sides with roofed collonades that were used as shops. Changes were made during the Roman period with a new floor and entrance
