Feb 9th 1864 Dear Father I sit down to write you a few lines to let you know that I am well at presant we have done some hard marching since I wrote to you last on the morning of the 4th we got up at 3 oclock and got break fast and at day light we started for black river we marched hard all day at 5 oclock in the evening we crossed the river and camped for the night at 11 oclock that night we got up and started for Jackson we marched untill day light where we stoped and got breakfast while we was eating we saw some rebs off at a distance so Co. A. was sent as skirmishers when they had gone a short distance they was fired on by the rebs they returned the fire and the rebs ran[?] and our men came back there was no body hurt so we started on we marched untill dark when we camped for the night we was 13 miles from Jackson at day light we started back to black river and garded the [word unclear] train that is our reg the rest of the Brigade went on to Jackson we marched on untill about 11 oclock when there was 5 rebs fired on the train a bout the [words unclear] way a bout 50 wagons in the train our Co. and Co. H. was rear gard so that we did not see them but they got [word unclear] of [word unclear] we then marched on at sun down we got to black river we stoped for the night at day light we got up and got something to eat and then started down down the river at 1 oclock we got to the railroad where we are at presant we have not got any tents yet its fine wether down here we be long to the 3 Brigade 1st Division 16 Army Corps. Gen Tuttle is our Division commander I dont know our Brig. commander there was 63 rebel prisners brought in from Jackson yesterday they say that the rebs are deserting everyday Father I must close Father I got a letter from James Massey yesterday I think from the way he talks he is a strong reb I will sen
