Some of us haveone of these attributes, but we miss the upper brackets ofachievement in our chosen fields of endeavor for the lack ofthe other. This is no less true in work then in otherkinds of hamming. A fellow who has ranked high in DXwork, for instance, is likely to make a pretty good , if he is thoroughly bitten by the bug. At least one did. The thrill of working in a fast-developing branch of theart caught the fancy of Ralph E. Thomas, W2UK, back inthe early 30s. DX men of the prewar era dont need to havehis record recounted, but some of todays DX enthusiastsmight be interested to see what one of the countrys operators did before he began to burn up*the Weve just come out from under a pile of old QSTs withthe following record of DX Contest participation byW2UK. In the first contest in which there was a scoringsystem, back in 1933, W2UK placed third in the section in a field of about 30. In 1934 he rated 14th inthe country, second in his ARRL section. The year W2UK up to 5th in the standing, with his coun-tries total third in the nation. By 1936 Tommy was the topW2, landing in 3rd place in the national ranking. In 1937 heposted the countrys top score in the competition andset a new countries-worked record with 71. His station, operated by another man to be, W2HNY, also madethe top W2 score on phone. First place again, and anothercountry record, 76, were achieved in 1938. The last DXcontest of the prewar period found W2UK in third placenationally, just a whisker behind the two leaders, with 80countries worked. With this background, it is easy to see that W2UK wasa sure bet to make his mark
