Perhaps the soil of no regionin the world has been worked by man to the same extentas the loess of Central Shensi, where the Chinese have beenscratching, sowing, and reaping uninterruptedly for some4000 years or more, and the landscape of those plainsappears tired and worn out. It is therefore a relief to getout of the loess, with its alternate dust and mud, glaringheat, insufficient and often brackish water, and treeless andmonotonou
