Moscow Kremlin Tour - 40. Tourists in Cathedral Square of Moscow Kremlin. Moscow, Russia, Monday, August 04, 2014. Assumption (Dormition) cathedral (left), Ivan the Great bell tower in the background. The bell tower was built because all the Kremlin cathedrals had no belfries. This tower was built in 1508 and is 81 m (266 ft) tall. For many centuries it was the tallest construction in Moscow. The naming Ivan is explained by the fact that the bell tower was built in place of the church of St. Ivan of the Ladder (that saint is also known as John of the Ladder, John Scholasticus and John Sinaites). The cathedral is devoted to the Dormition of the Theotokos. It was built in 1479 under the supervision of the Italian architect Aristotele Fioravanti. Fioravanti studied Russian methods of construction and architectural style and then created a masterpiece that combined the spirit of Renaissance with Russian traditions. The cathedral served as a place of the coronation of Russian tsars (czars) from 1547 to 1896. It is also a burial place of the most of Patriarchs of the Russian Orthodox Church and Moscow Metropolitans.
