Nurse using an otoscope (auriscope) to examine an elderly man's middle ear. The otoscope consists of a lens & light source, allowing the user an illuminated view down the external auditory meatus (the ear passage). In some adults, an overproduction of earwax leads to obstruction & partial deafness. This condition is treated by attempting to remove any plug of solid wax, or by trying to dissolve softer wax with warm oils, prior to flushing out any residue with warm water.
