Child's Knee

MRI of a lateral view of a child's normal knee, showing the open growth plates at the end of the femur (upper bone) and the upper part of the tibia (lower bone). The growth plates are the yellow bands crossing horizontally; they add length to the long bones. The brown-orange ends of the bones are epiphyses; the small bone on the left (green) is the patella; the dark band of tissue extending from the patella down is the patella tendon; and the small dark triangular structures in the knee joint comprise the meniscus. The muscles are pictured here in purple.
