Inauguration of Washington
George Washington was inaugurated as the first president of the United States on April 13, 1789. He appeared on the balcony of Federal Hall, New York (shown here), and took the oath of office in the presence of the Senate and House of Representatives and a large crowd of citizens assembled in the streets below.
