Canal narrow boats moored and reflected in the Leeds and Liverpool canal at Eldonian village in Liverpool. Boats at the IWA National Campaign Festival with in sight of the city of Liverpool. The Leeds and Liverpool canal was completed in 1816 and provided a trade route across the Pennines. This waterway highway opened up the efficient transport of goods from and to the Liverpool docks and the industrial towns and cites of East Lancashire and West Yorkshire. As the canal was replaced by railways and roads as a more efficient means of transport it became under threat of closure and possibly filling in. However thanks to the campaigning efforts of waterways enthusiasts the canal was saved from closure, though the last stretch into the city of Liverpool has been in filled and redeveloped and the canal now ends at the Eldonian village, about a mile from the city centre. To encourage boaters to visit this end of the canal land to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the completion of the canal the Inland Waterways Association held a boat rally at the village over the weekend of the 11th and 12th of June 2016.
