A young Khampa nomad outside her family's tent on the vast grasslands of Litang in eastern Tibet. The nomads of China face an uncertain future. Strangled by extortionate taxes, the privatisation of traditional grazing land and a landscape deeply affected by global warming, the nomads are now being encouraged to leave their roaming lifestyles for housing estates built on the edges of the Plateau's rapidly growing cities. Migrating from Mongolia several thousand years ago, the Khampa successfully live in one of the earth's most inhospitable places. Herding yak and basing their diet on their milk and barley flour, the Khampa live at altitudes ranging between 4000 and 5500 meters.
