Leithia giant dormouse, illustration. This extinct prehistoric mammal is an example of island gigantism. It evolved on the Mediterranean islands of Malta and Sicily. It existed during the Pleistocene (around million to 12,000 years ago). The skull of this giant dormouse reached lengths of 10 centimetres.
