There is little or no waste with the wirenail, and there are a greater number of themper pound than of cut nails of the samedenomination. The construction of cut nail machines ismore complex, and about three years timeis necessary to attain the skill and manualdexterity to successfully operate them, whilethe ability to operate the wire nail machinecan be acquired in about three weeks. The latter style machines were introducedinto the United States by Michael Myers, ofGermany, and were, I believe, first put inoperation about 1876, at the wire works inCovington, Ky., and no improvement inarrangement or efficiency has since beenmade in them. In fact, the French patternin common use for the past 50 years issimpler in construction and just as efficientas any of the so-called improved machines later produced. A
