Solar keratoses on the cheek of an 85-year-old man. They are small, rough bumps which develop on the skin and are caused by overexposure to sunlight over many years. In themselves, solar keratoses are not cancerous. However, 10% are thought to develop into squamous cell carcinoma, a slow growing type of skin cancer. Treatment, in the form of freezing, heating, ordinary or laser surgery, is advised if more than one keratosis is present.
