Remote controlled hearing aid. Close-up of a remote controlled hearing aid (left) with its handset. The hearing aid, which consists of a tiny microphone, amplifier and speaker, fits in the outer ear. The control allows the user to modify the way the hearing aid amplifies particular frequencies. (M switches on microphone; T picks up electromagnetically transmitted sound, which is often provided in phones or the theatre; N, H and HH allow background noise to be filtered out; the arrows control volume; the musical note gives a wider band of frequencies suitable for music.) Hearing aids are individually tuned to amplify the range of frequencies needed by the patient.
