In politicshe was very active in the ranks of the Republicanpartv, and soon after his location in Brooklvn hewas appointed a deputy sheriff by High SheriffRoger Coit, of Plainfield, and served under him fouryears, being re-appointed bv Coits successor andserving four vears more. Then he was elected tothe office of high sheriff of Windham county, serv-ing efficientlv for two terms. Mr. Gallup heldmany of the town offices, was judge of probate forseveral years, represented Brooklyn in the Legis-lature, and was also constantly engaged in thesettlement of estates. He married Maria C. Tyler, whowas a lineal descendant of Gen. Israel Putnam; shedied March i. 1882. David Gallup, the second son, is mentionedbelow. Ejther, the first daughter of David and NancyJacques) Gallup, was born June 27. 1811. andmarried Dr. Henry Campbell, of Sterling, Conn.,Sept. 6, 1831; she died in Providence, R. I., July24, 1865. Amos J. Gallup, the third son, was born 1812, and was married to ]\Iartha Gallup, , 1838. She was a daughter of Joseph and Han-nah (Smith) Gallup. Amos became a farmer, andsettled on the homestead in Sterling, Conn., but
