Original Cartoon from Punch Magazine 28 may 1887 by John Tenniel (1820-1914). Gladstone hemmed in by Joseph Chamberalin & Lord Hartington whose unionist faction had spilt the Liberal party & caused the downfall of Gladstone's Liberal government of 1886 on the issue of home rule. He was to be out of office until 1892 when he became the oldest premier at the age of 82. His second home rule bill then passed the commons reading but was rejected by the Lords. He retired shortly afterwards.
