An understandable treatment of combustion, coal analysis, flue gas analysis, heat losses in flue gases, draft, chimney design, evaporation, boiler efficiency, heat balance, feedwater treatment and CO recorders and their troubles. ingtwo matches instead of one and two matches have twice as muchwood as one. Then, why was not the temperature twice as great?Because the temperature or the intensity of heat depends uponthe nature of the fuel and the way it is burned while the amountburned determines the quantity of heat created. The fire under a50-hp. boiler may be just as hot, the temperature may be justas high, as the one under a 500-hp. boiler, yet it docs not do asmuch work, that is, heat as much water, because it docs not burnas much fuel and consequently does not generate as great a quan-tity of heat. Now, it is seldom possible to measure the quantity of heatdirect, but it is quite easy to calculate the quantity when the lO FUEL ECONOMY AND CO2 RECORDERS temperature and a few other factors are known. This is truebecause heat acts according to fixed laws, the same as every-thing else in this world. And when you once understand thoselaws it is easy to figure out what will happen when certain con-ditions 25
