Male musculature. Computer artwork of the male musculature based on Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man (circa 1492). These are the skeletal muscles, which are under the conscious control of the brain. Muscles are joined to bones by tendons. When a muscle contracts or relaxes it pulls on a tendon, producing movement in the skeleton. Skeletal muscles account for around 45% of body weight.
