Vv- ,,.,„? k \ r- - j z*a, / *V v^// Rotative Character of the Storm. 83 The Paradox of Revolving Winds.—It is still possible thatsome persons may not be able to understand, clearly, how thewind in a progressive storm which revolves in one constant di-rection around its axis, can at the same time be found to veer inopposite directions, on the opposite sides of the axis line, as isseen in Tables I. and III. respectively. But this fact, of whichan explanation has already been attempted, may be seen to be anecessary result of the law of rotation, as manifested in all revol-ving bodies; and failing to understand this law, no one can in-telligently pursue the inquiry. Let a circular disk of stiff paper be written upon in one ormore circular lines, around its center, either in a concentric orvorticose form ; then put this disk in rotation upon it
