Association for all railroads of theUnited States. The company writes as follows: The standard measurements for the head aredetermined for the face which fits the shoe alone,as the back must be made to fit any particulartype of beam used. This pattern of shoe wasadopted by the M. C. B. Association after muchconsideration of the question, and is undoubtedlyas economical a method of using a detachablebrake shoe as there is in service at the presenttime. The street railway companies could re-duce the cost of their brake shoes very largely ifthey would insist upon having this pattern ofshoe on all new trucks. Where but one patternof shoe is used the storekeepers task is consider-ably simplified, also that of the repair -^M- -o-n- -^AA^ /O- If now we assume that the controller has beenshifted to the first point of contact we can followthe path of the current throngh its circuitouspath from the trolley wire through all of the re-sistances, the armature and full Held of one motorand the armature and full field of the secondmotor, all in series, back to the contact thai leadsto the frame of the motor and so to the arrangement of motors and resistances isshown diagramatically at 1 in Pig. 3. Upon mov-ing the controller cylinder to the second point asshown at 3 in Fig. 1 we can again trace the pathof the current, whlcli will be found the same aswhen upon the first point except that one sectionof the resistance has been cut out. This is dia-gramatically shown at 3 In Fig. 3. Each of theten combinations as represented by the ten pointson the controller may be taken up and traced outin a similar manner. These ten combinationswill be found to be as shown in Fig. 3 and
