Crane fly. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a crane fly (Tipula sp.). In the true fly order Diptera the each hindwing is reduced to form so-called haltere (seen here lower right). Halteres act as counter balances, almost like a giroscope during flight. Crane flies are found worldwide, and their larvae, known as leatherjackets, are agricultural pests.
