James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) mirror cans. This telescope has 18 primary beryllium mirror segments that will work together as one large primary mirror. The JWST is an infrared telescope that is scheduled to be launched in 2018. By using infrared wavelengths, it will be able to see through dust that obscures visible light. It will also study dark matter, thought to form the majority of the matter in the universe. Manufactured by Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corporation of Boulder, Colorado, USA, the mirrors are stored in special canisters for shipping to NASA. Each mirror is coated in a small amount of gold. Photographed in August 2012.
