Open star cluster in Carina nebula, JWST image


James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) image of the open star cluster NGC 3324 in the Carina Nebula. At top is part of a gigantic gaseous cavity where extremely massive hot young stars are forming. Ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds from these stars are sculpting and eroding the nebula's wall (brown). Some of this erosion can be seen here in the hot ionised gas and dust that appears as 'steam' rising from the wall. NGC 3324 lies about 7,500 light years from Earth.
