U Leinestrasse, Underground U-Bahn railway station serves the U8 line & opened in 1929. Neukölln, Berlin, Germany The station was opened on August 4, 1929, and was the end of the line until 1996 when the line was extended to the present terminus at Hermannstraße. The station architects were Alfred Grenander and Alfred Fehse. The station has an island platform and light green square ceramic tiles line the walls. There is a ticket office in one of the foyers, but it is no longer used. The tunnel, which was extended to the south in 1932, ended shortly before Hermannstraße station and served as an air raid shelter during World War II. From April 1945 to May 17, 1945, the station was temporarily closed due to war damage. A basic renovation of the station commenced in 2011 with an estimated cost of five million euros. The expense of making the station barrier-free and weather and age-related damage that was discovered during the works incurred further expense and the renovation work ultimately cost around million euros. The station was renovated according to the original design, and historical pictures are displayed on the rear track walls. The originally planned installation of granite flooring was prevented by the monument protection authorities.
