Ancient Roman Silver Denarius

A silver denarius minted during the Roman Republic in 123 BC by M. Fannius. Coins during the Republic were issued by moneyers, officials appointed by the senate; they were usually quaestors but not always so. At this time denarii were very high in silver content, usually over 90% pure. The goddess Roma, embodiment and protector of all Romans appears on the obverse of the coin. The lettering reads ROMA, with an X to signifying the value of 10 As’. The reverse of the coin has the goddess Victory in a quadriga, a chariot drawn by 4 horses.
