For the waxen tablets of the ancients ametallic Stylus was employed, one end of which was sharpened formarking, and the other end was flattened for erasing the marks andsmoothing the wax. It was also the practice in ancient times, asamong the Chinese at the present day, to paint the letters with afine hair pencil.
