They are out of all pro-portion to rates in other cities, thewholesalers claim. Even allowing forhigher cost of operating here, the claimis made that the increased cost is notsufficient to justify the greatly increasedrates charged. Suffers Million Dollar Loss by Fire Part of the Plant Valued at Nearly a Million—Loss of Almost Half a Million Dollars in Goods Loaded for Shipment, or in Process—Margarine Plant Not Affected. FIRE which broke out in the HarrisAbattoir Companys plant, on Avenue, Toronto, on Tues-day evening, destroyed part of a plant,with a roughly estimated damage of amillion dollars, while the loss in the pro-ducts of the company will total half asmuch again. The fire started compara-tively early in the evening from somecause that has not yet been ascertained,and before it was under control it hadthe three-storey frame packing houseand the three-storey smoke room com-pletely destroyed, while the brick saus-age department was partially loading platforms, with its numbersof tracks, were also completely destroy-ed.
