At present the state leads all others inthe quantity of lumber cut, makes morethan half of the shingles manufactured inthe United States, and is second in the pro-duction of lath. The standing timber in thestate is estimated to be 200,000,000,000 3,500,000,000 to 4,000,000,000 feet oflumber is cut annually. There are 923 sawmills, 452 shingle mills, and about 1,200 log-ging and bolt camps. The industry employsdirectly 96,880 men, while the number en-gaged in transportation, producing and sup-plying mills and camps with machinery, Pugel Sound and Western Washington 19. MT.
