Chronic wound infection. Close-up of a chronically infected suture wound seen on a 58 year-old man's body 5 years after a coronary artery bypass operation. This surgical incision that has split open and become infected, has been drained of pus and will need sterile dressing and treatment with antibiotics. 5- 10% of surgical wounds become infected in spite of routine aseptic precautions during surgery. Coronary artery bypass surgery is used to restore a failing blood supply to the heart muscle.
