Statue of Wairaka, at the mouth of the Whakatane River, New Zealand

This statue commemorates the Maori Wairaka, and her heroic efforts to save women of the Mataatua canoe. The women were left aboard while the men went ashore and the canoe started to drift, but Wairaka picked up the forbidden paddle shouting "I will act as man" and paddled them to safety.
