View NE of St Peblig's Church, Caernarfon, Wales, UK, SE of Segontium Roman fort & immediately SSW of its Temple of Mithras (Mithraeum). Early Christian use of the site dates back to the C5th, the present church dates mainly from C14th to C16th with some visible C13th remains, & some Roman & pre-Norman work built into the fabric. St Peblig's is the mother church of Caernarfon dedicated to Publicius reputed son of Magnus Maximus, emperor of Gaul Spain & Britain AD383-8, & his wife Helen (Helena, St Elin) who feature in The Dream of Macsen Wledig in The Mabinogion. Slate headstones in foreground include two to the family of William Jones, a stone cutter who died in 1896 aged 47: the weeping willows & clasped male & female hands are popular symbols of mourning & the desire of a couple to be reunited in heaven.
