Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, Auckland, New Zealand. Architect: FJMT + Archimedia, 2011. Red by Choi Jeong Hwa - an install

Auckland Art Gallery was awarded World Building of the Year 2013 at the World Architecture Festival. The nine-year building redevelopment, completed in 2011, was a joint project between Australian architecture firm Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp (FJMT) and New Zealand studio Archimedia. The gallery is a vibrant focal point within the cultural precinct of the city and it successfully integrates the adjacent park and street while effortlessly connects art with people. The gallery is characterised by a series of fine ‘tree-like’ canopies referencing the beautiful overhanging pohutukawa trees of Albert Park. The gallery incorporates contemporary and restored heritage buildings which originally opened in 1888.
